The Devil is in the Details

Work in progress
Sometimes the most important use of faux is to hide unsightly elements.  When done well, it's truly magic- it makes them disappear!  I thought I might feature some of these meticulous details since their existence is virtually ignored by definition.  Still, no finish can be called finished without them.

Back in Park Slope:)
Making the pipes "go away".  It's tempting to go crazy with detail when working with such a small canvas but really key to keep it simple.  The pipes can't be more interesting than the wood!
Finished? Maybe one more layer...

It's almost been a year? How distressing!

Trying to keep up with a blog while keeping up with my toddler is equally distressing.  Don't be distressed, I'll make it up.  A review perhaps...
Testing 2 colors.  Only one layer!
So, speaking of distressing,  I was handed this article on Jewel's nursery because of the barnwood installation  and I thought hey, skip the expensive reclaimed barnwood idea, or at least don't hog it all for a wall to wall project, and instead install the boards and faux it!  Just so happened I was working on a distressed finish concept for application on bead board for a restaurant (not to look like barnwood, still, enough proof for me that it could easily be done and look AH-mazing).  Who'll be the first to have a wall of faux reclaimed barnwood?  Maybe a floor (ooooooh).  I think it would look so chic with a single dominant color.  I'm drooling.
Update: mirror relocated to Alice's room

Going back a wee bit further but on a similarly distressing subject,  I'm posting a pic of a mirror I did specifically for a "reveal" (sounds so reality show to me), which I believe is a designers presentation to a client of their finished space with all kinds of potential accoutrements which they may decline or acquire at a price.  The mirror was declined.  I put the finished mirror on Facebook but not on the blog, so some of you may have seen it before - this is before I understood that social networks interface.  Wait, I still don't really understand that.  Anyway, last I heard the mirror ended up in Tina Fey's little girl Alice's room.  She must be a very cool little girl indeed;-)

It all started a long time ago with a bit of vintage fabric

And that leads me to the final word on distressing stuff (until I start sanding again).  If it's true that the plumber's house has leaky pipes,  It would follow that my projects at home can stand a little more attention.  When Freya was a brand new baby, I bought these plastic, pre-primed shutters for her room with the intention of, you guessed it, distressing them.  Well, thanks to all this pervasive inspiration, they are completed and installed!  Of course she's 18 mos now, but I'm not distressed.

One of our favorite things? Blue Pearl!

The "smurfy" blue is just primer (phew).
Here's a late post regarding our latest gig in Greenwich.  We've just completed the library, fraught with the most spectacular molding.  What a rare treat to mix a yummy blue pearl glaze AND get to put it everywhere!  It's divine. Onto the kitchen...

That's more like it
Floors are done. It's booty time.

Autumn Relaunch

I can’t believe it’s been a decade since I gathered up my supplies and set out to paint solo.  What an incredible ten years and what incredible projects I’ve had the opportunity to work on with all of you.  You’re the reason why I’m still painting in 2010.  Although I did take a necessary break earlier this year…

In the midst of this past glorious springtime, I had a baby girl, Freya Esme.  She is, of course, my little sunshine.  Now with five months behind us, mommy is ready to get back to mixing colors and climbing ladders.  Well, maybe less climbing of ladders!  It’s true I’ll be relying more on my very talented team of artists and painters, but that will give me a lot more time to consult with my clients and focus on personalized finishes.

So back to business!  We are now officially EBNYC decorative  painting.  I’m working on a brand spanking new and long overdue website,  now at www.EBNYCpainting.com.    So please update  your contact info and contact me soon.  Fall is the perfect time of year for renovating, restoring and rethinking interiors.  Give me a call or drop me an email for a free and fun consultation.  I can’t wait to show you all the new finishes we’ve added to our repertoire.
